The origins of Shamanism stem from Northern Europe and Asia the word “shaman” comes to us from the Tungus language in Siberia they have strong beliefs in spirits, in realms of the sky and earth rituals with hunting, and were linked with specific animals which were deeply revered, especially bears, ravens, reindeer, wolves, and whales.

Shamans are the healers in the community and have traditionally been called upon to heal the sick, solve problems, protect from evil spirits, make predictions about the future and communicate between the spiritual world and human world and guide dead souls to the afterlife.

It is estimated that a quarter of Siberia's 40 million people practice shamanism to some degree the Khakas people from the Taiga region south of Siberia have preserved the ancient traditions of shamanism.

The shaman's drum and shamanic drumming are used to call the spirits that will help the shaman and can be used as a shield to ward off evil spirits from the underworld. Drums are made from wood from sacred trees and the hide of horses or reindeer. In ritual and ceremony drumming generates hypnotic beats which help send shaman into a trance.

Mongolian shamanism was influenced by Buddhism, particularly Tibetan Buddhism. Similar to the other Buddhist schools, Geluk combined the philosophy and cosmology of Mahayana Buddhism and incorporated distinctive qualities from the Vajrayana teachings to develop and cultivate its own traditions.

Further west near the Mongolian border, shamanism is often called Tengerism, a term that means “the honoring of spirits.

Shamanism in Siberia is very diverse each region has its own form of rituals and beliefs, for example, the Udeghe people are indigenous to the Russian Far East they used to be nomadic but now live as Russians do in villages.

The Chukchi are the Paleo-Asiatic people of northeastern Siberia their livelihood has traditionally revolved around reindeer herding, hunting, and fishing. Theyare closely related to the Inuit and Yupik just across the Bering Straits of North America.
