From the Wikipedia, the International Women’s Day came about from the labor movement in North America and Europe. The first National Women’s Day celebration was held on 28 February 1909 in the United States.

It was initiated by the Socialist Party of America to commemorate the year before the New York garment workers strike against the poor working conditions. Women were on strike at the factory which had been closed by the owner. A fire broke out in the building killing 126 women.

In 1910, the Socialist International in Copenhagen was established around the world, celebrated Women’s Day and was used in the idea of promoting women’s rights and to build public support for universal suffrage for women which has become famous via greeting and cards in their wish.

The conference was attended by over 100 participants from 17 countries; including three women who were first elected to the Finnish Parliament. Women’s Day was adopted by an anonymous vote, without setting a precise date for the event.

The United Nations Charter was signed in 1945, to be the first international document endorsing the principle of equality between women and men. In sixty years the United Nations participated in the development of international policies, standards, programs and objectives to promote raising the status of women.

The United Nations and its specialized agencies promote the equal participation of women in achieving sustainable development, peace, security and full respect for human rights. The issue of empowerment of women is in the centre of the UN in the fields of socio – economic – political in the world.
