In exchange for taking on Tesseract, a very powerful energy source, Other promises Loki the Chitauri army he can lead to subdue the Earth. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), director of the regulatory body S.H.I.E.L.D, and lieutenant Agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) arrived at a remote research facility during the evacuation, in which physicist Dr. Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård) led a team of researchers experimenting on the Tesseract. Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) explains that the object has begun to radiate an unusual form of energy. Tesseract suddenly activates and opens a wormhole, allowing Loki to reach Earth. Loki takes Tesseract and uses his wand to enslave Selvig and several agents, including Clint Barton / Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), to help him.
