Shaykh Mahmoud Khalil al-Husary was a famous qari who died in 1980.

Born in a village called Shobra al-Namla in Tanta Egypt in 1910, Mahmoud entered the Qur'ân School at the age of four. At the age of 8, he had memorized the entire Qur'an and at the age of 12, he entered religious educational institutions and studied qira'aat (reading) at al-Azhar University.

When he was twenty-five years old, Sheikh Mahmoud Khalil al-Husary went to Tanta and was popular as the famous qari. Ten years later, in 1944, Sheikh Mahmoud Khalil al-Husary moved to Cairo and worked on a radio station as a qari, where he recorded his first reading on February 16, 1944.

On August 7, 1948, Sheikh Mahmoud Khalil al-Husary became Mu'adhin Masjid Sidi Hamza and later became a qari in the same mosque. Sheikh Mahmoud Khalil al-Husary is also a supervisor at several Qari education centers in Al-Gharbia. In 1949, Mahmoud Khalil al-Husary was appointed qari Sidi Ahmed al-Badaoui in Tanta, Masjid al-Ahmadi and also Al-Imam Al-Hussein Mosque in Cairo in 1955.

In Cairo, Sheikh Mahmoud Khalil al-Husary also studied at Al-Azhar University and he became a renowned scholar and author of many books on various aspects of the Qur'an. Sheikh Mahmoud Khalil al-Husary is also involved in the recent Azhari printing of the Qur'anic text. In his status as qari he was given the title of Shaykh al-Maqâri (qari scientist), and his opinion was often asked and quoted by the media.

He was also invited to participate in the World of Islam Festival in London (1976). The voice recording of Sheikh al-Husary is widely distributed outside Egypt. As one of the four top qari rankings in Egypt, he recorded the full text of the Qur'an in both reading, murattal (tartiil) and mujawwad (tajwid) styles and he was the first to record and broadcast a murattal style.

Shaykh al-Husayn is known for his reading truth (tajwid). Mahmoud Khalil al-Husary was one of the most honorable reciters of his time. A movie series "Imam Al Moqr'ine", starring Hassan Youssef, is dedicated to the life and devotion of Sheikh Mahmoud Khalil al-Husary.
