There is a mud pit at the far end of the beach and a crowd around it. Two fighters go in. One walks out clean. Everything about this is undignified and that is exactly why it is fun.

HOW TO PLAY

Swipe to throw a punch. Swipe again to follow it up. Your opponent is doing the same thing at the same time, so this is about timing rather than mashing.

Land a clean hit and they stagger back into the mud. Take one and you do. Keep your footing, pick your moment and keep swinging until only one of you is upright.

Win and you move on to a tougher opponent in a messier pit.

WHY IT WORKS

The appeal is the mess. A fight on clean ground is a fight. A fight in a mud pit is a comedy, and the game knows it. Every landed punch throws a spray of it, every stagger leaves a print, and by the end of a long bout neither of you is recognisable.

Under the slapstick there is a real rhythm to learn. Opponents have timing you can read, and the moment you stop swiping wildly and start waiting for the gap is the moment the game clicks.

READING YOUR OPPONENT

Early fights are forgiving. You can swing more or less whenever you like and get away with it. Later ones are not. They punish a wild swipe immediately, and the only way through is to watch, wait and take the opening when it comes.

That shift from mashing to timing is the whole progression. The controls never change. You do.

BUILT FOR SHORT SESSIONS

A bout runs well under a minute. You step in, you swing, and it is settled one way or the other before you have properly sat down. Losing costs you nothing but a rematch, and the rematch loads immediately.

That makes it the sort of game you open for one fight and put down six fights later, usually because you refused to let a particular opponent beat you twice.

KEEP YOUR FOOTING

The pit is not just decoration. Mud slows everything down slightly, which is what turns a punch-for-punch exchange into something you have to think about. Swing too early and you are still recovering when they answer.

It also means momentum matters. Land two in a row and you can push someone across the pit. Miss two in a row and you will be the one going backwards.

QUICK TIPS

• Do not open with everything. Let them commit first and counter.

• Watch their stance, not the mud. The tell is in the shoulders.

• Two clean hits beat five wild ones. Patience wins more bouts than speed.

• If you keep losing to the same opponent, slow down rather than swiping faster.

THE CROWD IS WATCHING

Every bout happens in front of an audience, and the beach setting does a lot of the work. Parasols, sunshine, somebody's holiday completely derailed by two people deciding to settle something in a mud pit.

It keeps the tone light. Nothing here is serious, nobody gets hurt, and the worst thing that happens to the loser is needing a shower.
