Before 1871, as a nation-state, as in the sense of France, Germany there existed a Germanic world endowed with a certain coherence varying according to the epochs, linguistically, culturally, and sometimes political. The geographical extension of this Germanic world did not correspond exactly with that of present-day Germany and has varied over the course of history.
