If you're thinking of a bathroom redesign and refit, you should cast your eye over our top tips for points to remember and pitfalls to avoid.

Before you do anything else, measure your bathroom. Make a note of all the pertinent measurements and have it with you at all times, as you never know when you might be seized by the urge to 'bathroom shop' - and be prevented by lack of information! When drawing out a potential bathroom layout, remember to include space for moving around and using your bathroom - a sensible sized gap for basin and toilet use is approx 60cm; you should try to allow 70cm alongside the bath.

Think about the way you use your bathroom. Do you have a lot of items for which you need storage space? A minimalist bathroom is minimal by design - capacious bathroom cabinets are essential to keep your surfaces clutter-free. If you prefer a long soak in the bath, make sure there's room in your bathroom design for a big tub; if you prefer a shower, omitting the bath and making way for a huge walk-in shower enclosure could be the way to go. Think about what will work for you and base all your decisions on evidence - keep a 'bathroom diary' if necessary, so that you know what you really use in there!

What is your style? Traditional or modern? Minimal or detailed? If you love a streamlined look that's easy to clean, wall hung bathroom furniture could be good for you. This could look good in a wet room styled bathroom. Or perhaps you prefer a traditional look, with period style porcelain and a traditional roll top bath. Browse catalogues, showrooms, and online stores; visit a shop with a bathroom design service and take advantage of any layout or modelling services they provide. Don't start buying until you know the look you want.

Think about bathroom decor early on. Consider not just your personal tastes, but the size and natural light available in your bathroom. In a small or dingy bathroom, brighten your space by keeping to pale colours and using reflective tiles and mirrored surfaces to bounce light around the room. In a larger bathroom, you have more scope to add some drama with dark decor if you wish - rich coffee and burnished gold or copper tones can add instant warmth to a bathroom scheme.
