It detects and assets installed third-party keyboards to protect user privacy

Description:

This App is part of a study that involves answering some questions, to help understand users’ stance on mobile applications privacy risks. The results will be used to develop security tools and propose modifications to the Android platform. The study is being operated by PhD student Fadi Mohsen under the direction of Dr. Mohamed Shehab. It has been approved by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The app collects generic information from participants’ devices such as: Device model, API level, number of installed third-party keyboards, for each keyboard (when it was installed, last update, currently in use?, permissions),Time Zone?.

Risk and Benefit:

Risk & Benefit: By participating in this study, you are helping researchers develop a better insight into users’ attention to the risks and privacy concerns pertaining third-party mobile applications. No deception is involved and the study involves no anticipated risk to participants, any more than the normal level of risk encountered in daily life. Benefits include increased awareness of mobile devices privacy concerns when downloading and using third-party mobile applications.

Eligibility:

Eligible participants will be at least the age of 18, and possess an Android device.

Confidentiality:

All collected data (i.e., identity, gender, age and survey results) will be anonymized and treated as completely confidential. It will be saved in a secure, online storage protected by a username and password. After the data anlaysis phase, all digital files will be encrypted before archival.
