Look out for the bonuses that appear within the grid, these will help boost your score or lock a block. To remove a locked block you will have to create a line over it.
As the game progresses different shaped blocks will appear, and the faster it becomes.
If the shapes do not fit within the grid try using the passes to get a few more shapes.
There are world, weekly and Facebook leaderboards, so see if you can become the best in the world or between your friends.
