Ganesha, also commonly known as Ganapathi or Vinayaka, is one of the most popular deities of Hindu Mythology. He is unique in that he is the deity people pray to for removal of obstacles and impediments; every task and any task begins with prayers seeking his blessings.

The first son of Shiva( God of Destruction) and Parvati, Ganesha is easily identified with his characteristic elephant features; he has the head of an elephant, while his lower half is human. Legend has it, as mentioned in the Shiva Purana, that Ganesha's head was cut of by his father(Shiva) in a fit of anger. When that happened Paravati forbade Shiva from ever talking to her, unless she got to see her son alive. Shiva then, it is said, cut off the head of a devout elephant and replaced it with that of Ganesha. Thus Ganesha came to own the elephant's form.
