An ICE (IC Engine) or Internal Combustion Engine is heat engine that burns fuel within a combustion or cylinder and generates mechanical power.

The fuel get mixed with air and then the piston compresses the fuel mixed air and create energy to drive the vehicle. The combustion process happens inside , that is why this engine is called internal engine. This is the simplified process, The detail discussion is in the book.
