Agriculture is the utilization of biological resources by humans to produce food, industrial raw materials or energy sources, as well as to manage the environment. [1] The activities use of biological resources included in the farm is commonly understood to be the cultivation of plants or planting (English: crop cultivation) and enlargement of livestock (raising), although its scope may also be the use of microorganisms and bioenzim in the processing of advanced products, such as cheese-making and tempeh, or just mere extraction, such as fishing or forest exploitation.

The biggest part of the world population livelihood in areas in the sphere of agriculture, but agriculture only accounted for 4% of world GDP. Indonesian history since the colonial period until now can not be separated from agriculture and plantation sector, as the sector - this sector has a very important meaning in determining the formation of various economic and social realities in different regions of Indonesia. Based on BPS data in 2002, agriculture in Indonesia provides employment for approximately 44.3% of the population although it only accounts for around 17.3% of total gross domestic income.
