HERO

Real-time emissions help you decide when to use electricity

HERO, or Home Emissions Read-Out, gives users real-time emission estimates that allow them to selectively time their electricity use in order to reduce air emissions. HERO turns users into active participants in emissions optimization.

Armed with the information provided by HERO, you can strategically shift the timing of certain electric loads to reduce overall emissions from the electricity production. For example, if HERO predicts there will be low marginal emissions 2 hours from now, you could set a delay timer so that a dishwasher or clothes dryer will run during those hours.

HERO also includes information about different types of air pollutants, including major sources, and human and environmental effects of each pollutant.

You can also compare emissions at your location to other locations within the Midwest region that is covered by HERO.

HERO was developed by a team at Wayne State University and was made possible through support by the Great Lakes Protection Fund (GLPF). The team is working to expand HERO coverage to the entire United States and additional capabilities.
