বাউল একটি বিশেষ লোকাঁচার ও ধর্মমত। এই মতের সৃষ্টি হয়েছে বাংলার মাটিতে। বাউলকূল শিরোমণি লালন সাঁইয়ের গানের মধ্য দিয়ে বাউল মত পরিচতি লাভ করে। বাউল গান যেমন জীবন দর্শনে সম্পৃক্ত তেমনি সুর সমৃদ্ধ। বাউলদের সাদামাটা কৃচ্ছ্রসাধনার জীবন আর একতারা বাজিয়ে গান গেয়ে গ্রামে গ্রামে ঘুরে বেড়ানোই তাদের অভ্যাস।

বাউলেরা উদার ও অসাম্প্রদায়িক ধর্মসাধক। তারা মানবতার বাণী প্রচার করে। বাউল মতে বৈষ্ণবধর্ম এবং সূফীবাদের প্রভাব লক্ষ করা যায়। বাউলরা সবচেয়ে গুরুত্ব দেয় আত্মাকে। তাদের মতে আত্মাকে জানলেই পরমাত্মা বা সৃষ্টিকর্তাকে জানা যায়। আত্মা দেহে বাস করে তাই তারা দেহকে পবিত্র জ্ঞান করে। সাধারণত প্রথাগত শিক্ষায় শিক্ষিত না হলেও বাউলরা জীবনদর্শন সম্পর্কে অনেক গভীর কথা বলেছেন।

The Bauls (meaning "divinely inspired insanity") are a group of mystic minstrels (Muslim Sufis and Hindu Baishnos) from the Bengal region, who sang primarily in the 17th and 18th centuries. They are thought to have been influenced greatly by the Hindu tantric sect of the Kartabhajas as well as by Muslim Sufi philosophers. Bauls traveled and sang in search of the internal ideal, Moner Manush (Man of the Heart or the inner being), and described "superfluous" differences between religions.Lalon Fakir, alternatively known as Lalon Shah, who lived in the 19th century in and around Kushtia, is considered to be the greatest of all bauls.
