The coyote is a canine native in North America. It is smaller than its close relative, the gray wolf, being roughly the North American equivalent to the Old World golden jackal, but it is larger and more predatory. It is listed as "less of a concern" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), due to its widespread distribution and abundance throughout North America, south through Mexico and America Central. The species is flexible and capable of adapting to man-made environments. As human activity has altered the landscape, the range of coyote has been expanded. In 2013, coyotes were observed in eastern Panama (across the Panama Canal from their home range) for the first time. The coyote is more closely related to the common ancestor of wolves and other canids (more "basal") than its parent the gray wolf. In 2005, 19 subspecies of coyotes were recognized.
