YB Datuk Madius Tangau was born at Kg. Lokos, Kiulu, Tuaran on March 13, 1958 to a family of a Kadazandusun traditional hill padi cultivator, Mr. Tangau Gokis. He is the number four in a family of seven brothers (alive six) and seven sisters. He is married to Dr. Jaina Sintian in 1991 and now the couple is blessed with four daughters and a son.

Wilfred came from an agrarian family and has gone through all kinds of challenges. For example, at the age of 16 years old, he already had the capabilities to manage his kampung people. He organise all the villages to work as a team to develop land for all the family in Lokos. Through this activities the land owner will pay a token of RM 10.00 that will be put kept a fund. This fund will then be the main source for the JKKK to travel to Tuaran and ask for the betterment of infrastructure especially road. His effort finally paid of when in 1982 the road dream for the Lokos people came through after 7 year of struggle.

Mr. Wilfred received his primary school education at SRK Lokos, Kiulu, He completed his primary school education within five years, passing the primary six examination in 1970 as the top student of SRK Lokos for that year. In spite of the initial reluctance of his parents to allow him to continue with his secondary education, due to financial problem, he insisted to enroll in the Bridge Class at the Government Secondary School in Kiulu using his hard earned savings. He passed his Bridge Class examination in 1971 and continues studying in that school until Form Two. To supplement the meager finances from his parents he has to earn money by doing manual work in rubber estate and shops in Kiulu town during the weekends. He made savings on food and rental by working for a Chinese Taukey in Kiulu Town for two years.

At the end of Form Two he was awarded a Sabah State Government Boarding Scholarship. With the award he transferred to SMK Ranau for his Form Three in 1974. And with the better school facilities in SMK Ranau, Mr. Wilfred Tangau, passed the Lower Certificate of Education (LCE) with flying colors, which earned him a Sabah State Government Scholarship to purse his Form Four at the Setapak High School, Kuala Lumpur in 1975. In 1976 he sat for his Form Five Examination and passed his Malaysian Certificate of Education (MCE) with Grade One. With those results he was selected to pursue his Form Six at a Government Fully Residential School, Sekolah Menengah Sains Selangor (SMSS), with the same Sabah State Government Scholarship. While at this school he was very active in extra-curricular activities, including becoming a debater for the English Category in the Inter Fully Residential Prime Minister's Cup debate. He was also, the President of the Biology Club, Tang Hup Mu Do Kwan Club, Secretary of the school Food Committee as well as a School Librarians.

Having completed his Form Six he was accepted to do his Bachelor Degree in Forestry at the Universiti Pertanian Malaysia (UPM) in 1979. While waiting for the results of his Higher School Certificate in 1979, he was given the opportunity to teach as a temporary teacher at SMK Tamparuli for five months prior to his university education at UPM. While in UPM, he was active in student activities. He was the President of the Catholic Student Society at UPM for the year 1981 and 1982. As a university student he was a keen observer of political development both in the state of Sabah as well as at the national level. He attended numerous students' camps and forum.
