(৬০০ – ৬৬১) ইসলামের চতুর্থ ও শেষ খলিফা। তিনি ছিলেন আবু তালিবের পুত্র। তার মাতার নাম ফাতিমা বিনতে আসাদ । আলি কুরাইশ বংশে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। শিশু বয়স থেকেই তিনি ইসলামের নবী মুহাম্মদের (সা.) সঙ্গে লালিত-পালিত হন।

ইসলামের ইতিহাসে তিনি পুরুষদের মধ্যে সর্বপ্রথম যিনি নবী মুহাম্মদের সাথে নামাজ আদায় করতেন। বালকদের মধ্যে এবং পুরুষদের তিনি সর্ব প্রথম নবুয়তের ডাকে সাড়া দিয়ে মাত্র ১০ বছর বয়সে ইসলাম গ্রহণ করেন।

তিনি ছিলেন একজন অকুতোভয় যোদ্ধা। বদর যুদ্ধে বিশেষ বীরত্বের জন্য মুহাম্মদ তাকে "জুলফিকার" নামক তরবারি উপহার দিয়েছিলেন। খাইবারের সুরক্ষিত কামুস দুর্গ জয় করলে মহানবী তাকে "আসাদুল্লাহ" বা আল্লাহর সিংহ উপাধি দেন। তিনি খুলাফায়ে রাশেদিন-এর একজন।

হযরত (সা.) যে দশজনকে জান্নাতে প্রবেশ লাভ করবেন বলে স্পষ্টভাবে সুসংবাদ প্রদান করেন, তিনি তাদের অন্যতম। উমার (রা.) কর্তৃক তাঁর মৃত্যুশয্যায় মনোনীত ছয়জন নির্বাচকেরও তিনি ছিলেন অন্যতম ।

হয়রত আলি কুরায়িশ বংশে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। এই বংশ পবিত্র কাবা শরিফের রক্ষক। এই বংশের সেরা শাখাটির নাম হচ্ছে হাশেমি। হযরত আলি এর মাতা ও পিতা উভয়েই হাশেমি ছিলেন। তাঁর পিতার নাম আবু তালিব এবং মাতার নাম ফাতিমা বিনতে আসাদ। আরব দেশে পুত্রের নামের সাথে মিলিয়ে পিতার নাম ডাকা হয়।

He is one of the few who clearly give the glad tidings that Hazrat (peace be upon him) will get ten people to enter Paradise. He was one of the six selectors nominated by Umar (R) in his deathbed.

The deceased Ali was born in the Qureshi lineage. This clan is the protector of holy Ka'ba Sharif. Hashemi is the best branch of this dynasty. Ali's mother and father were both Hashemi. His father's name was Abu Talib and mother's name Fatima bint Assad. In the Arab world, Father's name was called together with the son's name.
