The British Invasion was when music came of age — not in America, where rock ’n’ roll was already a healthy seven years old; nor in the U.K. It was on a global scale that the Invasion mattered, translating for a worldwide audience the thoughts and dreams of a truly provincial musical movement. For what else were Manchester, St. Albans, Newcastle and Liverpool (the home cities of our first four entrants) if not provincial?
