Ammos

The app aims at the prevention and minimization of smoking litter at beaches.

Ammos app (Ammos is the Greek word for “sand”) has been developed within the European co-funded LIFE AMMOS project. It enables the user to rank the beach he is visiting based on the presence of smoking related litter (cigarette butts) and share the results of his evaluation.

Using the Ammos app the user can see the evaluation results from all beaches and choose the cleanest beach to visit in terms of smoking related litter.

LIFE AMMOS project aims at the prevention and minimization of smoking litter at beaches.

The disposal of cigarette butts and other litters on the beach, besides the aesthetic impact, results to significant impacts to the marine and coastal ecosystem.

Taking into account the intension and the extent of the occurrence of the specific litters in Greek beaches, it appears imperative the need of changing public behavior (smokers and non smokers) as well as the development of measures for the reduction of this situation.
