The Word of God Every Day 2016 opens with the icon of archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero, who was beatified on May 23, 2015. The beatification of Romero shines a ray of light in this year that Pope Francis has wanted to be a "year of mercy." In the Bull of Indiction of the Holy Year of Mercy, Misericordiae Vultus, Pope Francis writes: "At times we are called to gaze even more attentively on mercy so that we may become a more effective sign of the Father’s action in our lives. For this reason I have proclaimed an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy as a special time for the Church, a time when the witness of believers might grow stronger and more effective." With humility and simplicity, the book joins in this time of mercy to help people live it by listening to the Word of God. It is in the continued practice of listening that we can grasp the mystery of God's love that renews hearts and history.
