Like any career path in life, getting through the hard parts is a lot easier if you love what you're doing. To that point, it is widely believed that dentists are not created - they're grown. At an early age, most future dentists will have some sort of connection with teeth? They will be fascinated by them, and/or interested in how they work. As these future dental professionals mature and grow they will begin to apply for college. Those truly focused on becoming dentists will attend a school with an excellent science / biology program. Getting to know the body is the first step in the learning process. Once a base of general science is built, these folks can begin further and more focused studies on the mouth and teeth.

Somewhere between junior and senior year of college, those who are still interested in pursuing a career in dentistry will apply to dental school. Before applying, each applicant must pass the Dental Admissions Test (DAT) and receive high marks in their other studies. Additionally, there is usually an interview scheduled with the school's admissions board, determining whether or not a student is ready to devote themselves to dentistry.

Once admitted, an individual can expect to spend around 4 years studying various procedures and techniques, again building a base of general knowledge. Eventually, though not in every case, a student may pick up an interest in a particular field - not just general dentistry. If so, he/she will take specific classes, building even more, unique knowledge.

Lastly, after a year or two of interning/residency, a student will be able to call themselves a full-fledged dentist. Finding a job or starting their own practice is the next step, which in this economy may be the toughest part of the process. Still, considering their unique expertise - most dentist get by just fine.
